Welcome to the Stroll Petoskey Magazine Website! Downtown Petoskey is a wonderful place to visit because of its varied offerings. You can find beautiful artwork throughout the galleries, fine furnishings and design services, fabulous food, and great opportunities for memorable experiences, as well. In addition, Petoskey, like so many of Michigans towns and cities, has a wonderful history. Petoskey started in 1852, but was known as Bear River. At the time, Presbyterian Missionary Andrew Porter arrived and began teaching and helping the Bear River Indians, who received his ideas well. It was not until 1873 that the town began to grow, and grow it did. On November 25, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad pulled in for the first time Within only a year, Bear River was renamed to Petoskey (after Chief Petoskey), a store and two hotels were built, and visitors began swarming the small town. You may have heard Petoskey described as the town with the Million-Dollar Sunsets. This term was coined by Grand Rapids Times reporter, George Gage, who was on hand when that first train pulled in and witnessed the sun setting over snow-laden tree tops and the shimmering water. Visitors still flock to Petoskey to enjoy the beautiful views and rich history and culture. I invite you to take a Stroll through Downtown Petoskey. Notice some of the architecture, have a seat in the park, enjoy the unique shopping experience, and get a bite to eat. Downtown Petoskey is an experience youll not soon forget.
